SAGAMA 春窯

——Harugama’s works seem to have a very warm feeling with the clay color of Karatsu-yaki and the motifs of nature. What do you keep in mind when creating your pottery?

Karatsu ware expresses its charm of simplicity, warmth, and strength with its coarse, rough texture called “suname” and austere colors.

Harugama aims to create ceramics that complement dishes while utilizing such traditions and incorporating new colors.

——How did you become a potter?

I took a ceramics class in college.

I was so moved by the experience of eating with ceramics that I had made myself that I wanted to become more skillful and create ceramics that would please many people.

——Harugama is located in a quiet area along a river, not far from Karatsu Castle. What was the motivation for opening a kiln here?

Having experienced Hagiyaki and Arita-yaki, two completely opposite types of pottery, we wanted to create an original kiln that would take advantage of both.

Karatsu-yaki, which is handmade and has various decorative techniques and is also known as “beauty of use” (pottery that is completed when served with food), provided us with the perfect environment and unlimited possibilities.

——How do you currently present your work?

We have exhibited and sold our products at department stores and pottery events throughout Japan. We cherish the insights we gain from visiting these events, such as the fact that tastes differ from region to region, and the way shapes and patterns are painted, which is inspired by conversations with customers.

——You use natural flowers and plants as your motifs. What is the source of your inspiration?

The new technique called “Yuribeni,” which can take advantage of the warmth of Karatsu ware, has allowed us to expand the range of our designs with more plants featuring red flowers and berries. ”Yuribeni” is a technique that uses copper-based pigments to produce a light crimson color when fired.

——How is Harugama different from other kilns?

Inheriting the traditional techniques of Karatsu-yaki porcelain and drawing on the experience gained from Hagiyaki and Arita-yaki porcelain, we produce ceramic tableware that combines the warmth of handmade, hand-painted ceramics with practicality and durability.

We strive to create pottery tableware that is easy to use, has a shape that is easy to hold, and is designed to show off the food, to make eating enjoyable and enriching.
